Abstract

In the last decade, various methodologies and tools have been designed to audit and certify the performance of digital preservation systems. Audits evaluate documentary processes, the roles of archives, as well as administrative, legal, and technological aspects, among other variables involved in digital preservation. Even though these audits can be carried out and comercialized by certain companies at a price that only some archives can afford, there are open and free evaluation methodologies available. This article reports on the results of a comparative analysis of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Digital Preservation Levels and the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) Rapid Assessment Model. It describes and analyses each methodology separately. The main conclusions state that both models are complementary and that their applicability enables sound and audiovisual archives to evaluate the use of practices, technologies, and processes, as well as finding gaps, thereby formulating actions to ensure sustainable digital preservation. Likewise, they also serve as tools that enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of archives.
