Abstract

Digital images of cultural heritage can be understood as representations of elements from the real world, which, taken as digital objects, become a means of capturing the different forms of interpretation that such elements, as representatives of ideas, values, and knowledge, aim to convey. This perspective is in line with the principle of polyrepresentation, which by suggesting the cognitive overlap of representative aspects, provides conditions to strengthen the semantics of digital objects. Therefore, the objective of this work is to discuss the potential of cultural heritage images as digital objects, using the perspective of polyrepresentation. Based on an exploratory-descriptive, qualitative and bibliographical study, and review of the Europeana Image classification pilot project, the results highlight that cultural heritage digital images, when treated as digital objects, can be represented in different configurations depending on the context, under a modular and granular character that provide conditions for these images to be interpreted at different levels of interaction.
