Abstract

The collection is an essential component of the public library. As such, development of its theoretical principles is very important. The theoretical basis of the process needs to be adapted to each library in accord with the issues that emerge during the process of the library’s evolution. This article aims to identify the theoretical basis of collection development in public libraries holding hybrid collections. To achieve such ends, the authors analyze an array of scientific publications, including most importantly the ifla/unesco GeDePeLeSe. At the same time, these general principles are fleshed out with information gathered from examination of the web sites of several public libraries and through direct inspection of library facilities.
