Abstract

The article discusses the challenges facing preserving humanity’s digital heritage in the context of a global emergency caused by climate change. Considerable documentary heritage created or transferred to digital formats is preserved in e-archives that use technologies and documentary practices that generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the trace of which is known as carbon footprint. Based on qualitative research, this article identifies the variables associated with digital preservation that impact climate change. Furthermore, sustainable e-archiving is a concept proposed as a social and technological information system that preserves digital documents deemed essential fo society’s future understanding in an environmentally responsible manner.
